Our client, a prominent, multiple award winning Vancouver-based architectural firm, is adding a Business and Operations Manager to its team. Their diverse and talented team of 50 has had a profound impact on the Vancouver-area architectural landscape from schools, to community centres, to office and residential towers, to infrastructural projects and beyond.


The Business and Operations Manager is someone who understands what it takes to implement strategies and achieve sustained success. The ideal candidate should be great at making all aspects of the business run more efficiently from marketing and sales to finance and IT, including daily operations. This includes managing and mentoring relevant staff. Interpersonal skills and leadership capability are paramount, as great teamwork is vital to their success. Suitable candidates should be able to identify new opportunities quickly and aim to achieve defined objectives. Candidates are also expected to be able to think on their feet. The landscape of this industry changes fast and they need someone who is agile, adapting and learning fast. Working with direct input from the Partners, the Business and Operations Manager will be a key position with this dynamic Architectural firm.

What you will be doing:
  • Overseeing division administrative services including: Marketing, communications (internal and external), finance, project management, project compliance, IT and human resources.
  • Provide direction and leadership to all staff assigned to administrative and operations functions.
  • Overseeing communication by corresponding with employees and external stakeholders to keep them informed of company developments.
  • Communicating with targeted and interested parties to announce new ventures and discuss organizational changes in a way that attempts to maintain a positive image of the company.
  • Distributing executive messages, preparing presentations and internal memos and conducting meetings to share information.
  • Development of print materials and branding strategies for employee and customer use.
  • Establishing programs to maximize productivity, teamwork and utilization.
  • Providing leadership for quality improvement strategies, reaping greater efficiency, effectiveness, and teamwork
  • Participating in the development, communication and administration of policies and programs
  • Overseeing facilities management, including space design, utilization, renovation, maintenance and contracts.
  • Coordinating with the functional leadership team to ensure the required support from the various support functions is received (administration, bookkeeping, IT, Marketing and HR)
  • Providing input to business and strategic planning
  • Taking initiative and leading innovation and implementing initiatives effectively.
  • Collaborating with the leadership team to implement policies and develop improvements
  • Organizing and coordinating operations
  • Providing guidance to subordinate staff and evaluating performance
  • Managing various projects to completion
  • Assisting in other tasks as assigned

Who You are:
  • Proven experience (7+ years) as business manager or relevant role in management with multiple departmental responsibility.
  • Prior experience working in an Architect or other professional services setting preferred
  • Exposure to operations, information technology, legal/IP management, talent development, firm communications, Human Resources and organizational development.
  • Knowledge of project management and proven adherence to budget and timelines
  • Knowledge of fiscal planning, budgeting and reporting
  • Excellent organizational and leadership skills, interest in design
  • Outstanding communication and interpersonal abilities
  • Excellent organizational and leadership skills and the ability to lead and work in a Community Culture.
  • Flexibility to work in a changing environment and the initiative to play a leadership role.
  • Excellent employee relation skills and sensitivities to the complexities of an architect firm.
  • Outstanding relationship and team-building skills, with the ability to motivate, assess talent and discipline effectively.
  • Solutions oriented with the ability to address problems by gathering relevant information, formulating alternatives and building consensus around decisions.
  • Familiarity with the design / construction industry preferred
  • Thorough understanding of diverse business processes and strategy development
  • Excellent knowledge of MS Office, Adobe suite of software, databases and information systems and social media opportunities
  • Solutions oriented with the ability to address problems by gathering relevant information, formulating alternatives and building consensus around decisions.
  • Energetic with the ability to work in a fast-paced, team-oriented environment.
  • Good understanding of research methods and data analysis techniques
  • Degree in Business Management or relevant field; MBA will be a plus
  • Occupational First Aid Level 2 certification preferred / willingness to achieve
