CHIEF OPERATING OFFICER

Reports to: Chief Executive Officer (CEO) and President

The Chief Operating Officer (COO) is responsible for assuming a substantial “business partner” role to the CEO, with ownership of quality management, production, supply chain management and logistics, operations, facilities, customer care, contract manufacturing, and information technology departments. Must have a strong financial experience.

The COO will provide leadership and strategic vision to the organization, bringing operational, managerial and administrative procedures, reporting structures, and operational controls. The COO will effectively communicate and foster growth among the executive team and all employees. This is a vital leadership role that will drive results, spur growth, and increase the overall efficiency of the corporation.

RESPONSIBILITIES

  • Providing clear leadership and strategic vision while inspiring and motivating members of high-performing teams to achieve collective excellence.
  • Owning strategic and tactical aspects of the business by creating, growing, and building a world class, industry-leading organization using key performance indicators to ensure that all projects are delivered on-time while optimizing cost and ensuring the highest quality standards are upheld.
  • Impacting and driving company results from both an operational and financial perspective, while working closely with the CEO and President and other executive team members.
  • Setting challenging and realistic goals for growth, performance, and profitability.
  • Creating effective measurement tools to influence and gauge the efficiency and effectiveness of internal and external processes while evaluating challenges, identifying gaps, mitigating risk, and developing opportunities.
  • Adopting best practices to drive cross-functional and organizational departments, ensuring accountability, coordination, and communication throughout the company.
  • Providing accurate and timely reports that outline the operational condition of the company.
  • Spearheading the development, communication, and implementation of effective growth strategies and processes.
  • Proactively preparing and managing an annual budget and forecast, including capital expenditures.
  • Working closely with the CEO and President, and other team members to create, implement, and roll out plans for operational processes, internal infrastructures, reporting systems, and company policies designed to foster growth, profitably, and efficiencies within the company.
  • Motivating, encouraging, and coaching team members at all levels.
  • Using exceptional communication and interpersonal skills to influence, interact, and work effectively with key internal and external stakeholders.
  • Forging strategic partnerships to negotiate and engage with key stakeholders to facilitate collaboration, business plans, roadmaps, and strategic vision.
  • Fostering a growth-oriented, positive, and encouraging environment while keeping employees and management accountable to company policies, procedures, and guidelines.
  • Designing, planning, and implementing business strategies, plans, and procedures to influence the productivity and effectiveness of the organization.
  • Setting comprehensive goals for business growth and success leading all aspects of quality management, production, supply chain management, operations, facilities, customer care, contract manufacturing, logistics, information technology, and personal protective equipment.
  • Having overall strategic and tactical responsibility and accountability for the following business functions:
    • Quality Management System (QMS) - Defining, documenting, implementing, establishing, and maintaining (QMS), including promoting regulatory awareness throughout the organization.
    • Production - Implementing strategic operational goals to exceed customer expectations for quality, cost, and delivery while maximizing efficiency, optimizing production levels, and driving operational excellence. Working seamlessly and carrying a strong track record of success in a variety of production environments and partnerships, including internal manufacturing, contract manufacturing, and transitioning to contract manufacturing.
    • Ensuring Health, Safety and Environmental issues are prioritized while facilitating, directing, and implementing effective business strategies that drive continuous improvement across all related production and manufacturing business functions.
    • Supply chain management and logistics - Planning and directing all aspects of the organization's supply chain policies, objectives, and initiatives, overseeing the all-product inventory, warehousing, distribution, and transportation function.
    • Operations - Overseeing near- and long-term strategies and tactics to ensure smooth, efficient, and effective operations as the organization grows and scales.
    • Facilities management - Responsibility for the condition and functioning of the building’s structure and all of the equipment and services used. Engaging all contractors and overseeing their work to ensure that all required and desired standards are met.
    • Customer care - Providing oversight to ensure the best patient and provider experience are delivered, and that the department is run in an efficient and customer-centric manner, shaping
  • the customer service experience, increasing customer satisfaction, loyalty, and retention.
  • Contract manufacturing – Accountability for production reliability, cost performance, quality, customer service results while leading cross-functional project teams to support bringing innovations to market.
  • Information Technology – Overseeing the design, development, and implementation of the organization’s information systems, software applications, IT support, and infrastructure systems.
  • Personal protective equipment - Overseeing the company’s PPE operations and partnerships.
Additionally, due to the ever-changing and sometimes chaotic environment of an early-stage high-tech company, the Chief Operating Officer may assume additional roles and responsibilities, as required.


QUALIFICATIONS:
  • Bachelor’s degree or equivalent. MBA will be considered an asset.
  • 15+ years in leadership experience in a similar role with specific experience with medical devices, digital health and/or health technologies.
  • Experience with wearable technologies, sensor-related technologies, and ISO 13485.
  • Exceptional executive presence, business acumen, and sense of humour.
  • Budgeting and/or financial focused mindset.
  • Demonstrates a strong sense of urgency and achievement orientation to appropriately drive business development and support the rapid growth of the company.
  • Demonstrated success championing quality management system requirements,
  • Demonstrated ability to successfully negotiate timely “win-win” deals.
  • Problem-solving approach with demonstrated ability to analyze complex issues and create tangible action plans.
  • Demonstrated ability to learn quickly, yet comprehensively.
  • Demonstrated ability to influence decision-makers across functional groups and outside the company.
  • Confident negotiator with the ability to negotiate at all levels.
  • Demonstrated ability to drive the development of business strategies and operational processes, and lead the teams ensuring best practices are implemented and followed.
  • Proven self-motivation and ability to deliver under pressure.
  • Strong communication and presentation skills
  • Exceptional relationship management and stakeholder management skills.
  • Demonstrated ability to thrive in a high-tempo, small, and rapidly evolving, early-stage technology company environment.
