Due to our client’s substantial growth, they have asked Sean Baker of MacDonald Search Group to assist in the recruitment of a Manager, Western Canada - Commercial Driver Safety in Calgary. The successful candidate will become the ambassador of safety within the fleet team and will assist in recruiting, training and establishing best practices to meet or exceed federal and provincial regulatory requirements.

This position will report to national safety leadership and also to operations. The successful candidate will be responsible for developing and continuing to upgrade the Transportation Safety and Compliance programs for this trucking organization and have oversight of all initiatives, including audits, risk assessments and investigations while being the internal expert on compliance legislation and OH&S.

Duties and Responsibilities include:

  • Assess compliance and operational risks and develop risk management strategies
  • Monitor and measure transportation safety and compliance systems to ensure their effectiveness
  • Support new driver recruitment , selection and testing
  • Develop new driver onboarding program to ensure safety and compliance including driver qualification files, driver logs, trip sheets, accident reporting procedures and professional driver enhancement
  • Assist with compliance & licensing regulations: CVOR, IRP plates/licensing, IFTA
  • Oversee performance management of drivers to ensure compliance standards are met and applicable transportation violations are addressed
  • Review transportation safety and work practices as well as direct or conduct motor vehicle accident and incident investigations
  • Liaise with insurance companies to develop strategies to reduce risk and claims experience
  • Become the point of contact with transportation regulators to address any violations

Skills and Qualifications:
  • Strong knowledge of provincial and federal safety rules and regulations
  • 5 plus years in a fleet safety position within trucking
  • Knowledge of safety management system principles, industry best practices and standards, health and safety legislation
  • Strong leadership skills with the ability to set clear expectations, coach, develop and manage performance
  • Strong computer skills required for creating and tracking of reports
  • Problem solving and analytical skills required to be able to investigate accidents and incidents
  • Proven skill at working with all levels including drivers and senior management
  • Ability to travel as needed
