Where are you from?

I’m from a town called Preston in the north of England. Preston’s claim to fame is being a founding member of the Football League and home to the oldest football ground used by a professional club.

Where are you now?

I’ve lived in Toronto now for the last 23 years. I lived in a few areas throughout the city and currently reside in the Beaches neighborhood. I’ve recently joined MacDonald Search Group and have established our office in the Liberty Village area.

How did you get here?

My first visit to Canada was a vacation in ’95 and I had some great experiences. One was meeting John Sleeman.

Coming from the Beverage Alcohol industry in the UK, I thought it would be interesting to have a conversation with someone from the industry. So, I reached out to Sleeman’s by phone and John Sleeman took the call. He invited me out, gave me a tour of the brewery, and then kindly took me for lunch. I left thinking that if all Canadians were like this, then maybe Canada is the place for me.

I came back on a work visa in early ’96. I started with a small beverage broker, then transitioned to a marketing company, and next joined a graphic design firm. In 2000, I became friends with a respected recruiter in the city and the rest is history.

Why are you excited to work with MacDonald Search Group?

When I first spoke with Bruce MacDonald, he hit a chord. He and Jeff Danis outlined their approach to the business and it was very clear we were aligned. We treat both candidates and clients as we would expect to be treated ourselves; with open communication and respect. I’m excited to be part of an organization that works by the golden rule of treating all our clients with respect. We feel good about our work, and our clients do too.

I’m looking forward to building the practice in Toronto as an extension of the principles established in the other offices. I’m eager to apply coaching and mentorship for junior individuals in business and have my success gauged by the success of those I lead and work with.

What do you bring to the team?

17 years of recruitment experience in the Toronto market. I've worked in a variety of industries, from entry-level to the C-Suite.

I work as a head-hunter, not a staffing agent. I leverage the newest technology and try to make placements more efficiently. I’m up-to-speed with the landscape and can identify people who are not only going to serve in the required position, but grow well with the company as a long-term investment.

I strive to make sure people know that I actually care about them. I hope people find me personable and approachable with a sense of humor and enjoyable to work with. I mean what I say and I make the staffing process easy and relaxed. I work to make sure everyone is prepared, informed, and set up for success and supported through out.

What is the best advice you’ve ever received?

Something that I tell my children is that they should never do something for the approval of someone else. It’s important that my two girls don’t just fall in line with expectations of others. Do it for yourself.

Who is your role model, and why?

My Father, I’m very much like him. He was a simple, down to earth individual who would go out of his way to help others. He believed that what goes around, comes around and expected us to treat others as we expected to be treated. That’s what he said. That’s what I do. And that’s what MacDonald Search Group believes, too.

What is your greatest career achievement to date?

A typical question we ask candidates, and not always an easy one to answer.

A couple of things come to mind. I came to Canada with no family, friends, or contacts and have made it home now for 23 years. And second, getting through the financial crisis in 2008 required me to reinvent myself in order to get through it, but I came out a better business person because of it.

My only regret is that I didn't create LinkedIn.

What is your favourite way to spend your time?

I’m my daughter's personal Uber driver for hockey and horseback riding. When I eventually have some time to myself, I enjoy playing squash, photography, and small home renovation projects. And maybe a Guinness or two.
